ALL ABOUT LAKE THUNDERHEAD

The lake was started in 1963, when hundreds of local citizens joined together to design and build a private recreation lake just north of Unionville, Missouri. The lake dammed Blackbird Creek and backed water to one mile from the Iowa border. The lake covers 1,050 acres of water, 34 miles of shore line and is approximately seven miles in length.

In the early 60’s and 70’s, Spring Beauty, Blazing Star, and Golden Aster Additions were developed with a total of 467 lots. In the 90’s, Meadow Rue, Willow Brooke, and Prairie Rose were developed with a total of 478 lots. We currently have approximately 240 homes at Lake Thunderhead.

Fishing

Fishing is the most popular activity at the lake. It has been professionally stocked with bass, crappie, walleye, bluegill and catfish. The depth of the lake is 27 to 35 feet with numerous coves averaging 8 to 10 feet. The lake has many natural springs, a dense shad population and established coontail habitat that make for excellent fishing. Bass and walleye averaging 2.5 to 3 lbs. with some being caught up to 10 lbs. and over. Catfish averaging 3 to 4 lbs. with some being caught up to 15 lbs. and over on rod and reel, lines, and jugs between sunset and sunrise. The entire family can enjoy fishing from a pontoon boat. We have the best all-around fishing lake in Iowa and Missouri. Property owners can test their skills at several fishing tournaments held annually.
